I'm Mika De Roo. I was born and raised in New York City, and I went to college and grad school in the Midwest. I currently live in my adopted NYC borough, Brooklyn, with my partner and our dog Kina.
I have spent most of my professional life being a steward of knowledge and stories. My love of language and how it brings shape and meaning to human experience is central to what I do for my clients. My career arc includes strategy and integrated messaging for corporate businesses, non-profits, and individuals; writing and editing for publishers and authors; and teaching.
What I believe and love: I believe in working hard and making time for personal relationships and pursuits that bring joy and rejuvenation. I believe we each must look inside our selves to face challenges and make change. I believe changing is a lifelong journey.
I believe that kindness, passion, compassion, and authenticity are our greatest sources of creativity, purpose, and meaning. I believe education, reading and writing especially, opens more doors than can be fathomed. And I believe we all ought to try to make the world a better place—to promote equity and justice—by virtue of how we live. Every one of us who participates in that act of civic and community engagement matters and makes a difference.
I approach life with curiosity. In my free time, I write essays and fiction, bicycle, read a ton, take photos, and volunteer for causes I care about. I love the process of making things and creating experiences—events, books, websites, graphic tee-shirts, posters, music playlists, meals and drinks. During pandemic lockdown, I launched a blog that I still maintain. When I was recruited to help plan a college reunion, predictably I ended up leading the charge on a storytelling panel and a visual art exhibit.
I always want to know what that song or recipe is, who wrote that book and made that album, painting, or film, how the mechanics of that machine works. I love exploration, particularly explorations of innovation and imagination.
I love to travel, and I have roadtripped across most of the U.S., as well as through Costa Rica and eastern Mexico. My favorite international travels to date have been in Italy, Iceland, and Norway. The days I spend each year on the Cape Cod beaches of Wellfleet, Truro, and Provincetown are fundamental to my well being.
